Second time at the property. Enviornment is outstanding extensive gardens wonderful views , good accommodation clean and well maintained, Staff very friendly and accommodating. Food very good on the whole. The only slight negative for us that evening meals overly thought out. We would liked to see some plain simple vegetables rather than minute portions of puréed pumpkin and the like.

We already stayed at Casa Velha do Palheiro around 10 times and we love, that it is a small hotel with the elegance, tradition, and coziness, associated with expansive gardens, solid wood furniture and fireplaces. And also we enjoy the Palheiro Golf course very much.

Our stay was wonderful. The staff were kind and attentive, ready to help us when needed. We thoroughly enjoyed the leisured, home from home comfort of the hotel and fantastic gardens. Golfing was challenging in spectacular scenery. We hope to come back to stay one day soon.

Our week was wonderful - even better than our expectations. A delightful and welcoming hotel, the best service, a superb golf course and club house next to it and fantastic views. We even got to meet other guests over a madeira wine tasting, and they were a delight too.

We had a very pleasant stay at Casa Velha do Palheiro. We came to Madeira for a golf holiday and the location of this hotel is excellent to do that. On top of the location the food and the accommodation add to the overall experience. It was simply amazing.

Sehr freundliches und hilfsbereites Personal, sehr schöne, gediegene Atmosphäre in einer reizvollen Umgebung. Interessanter , abwechslungsreicher Golfplatz. Auch im Golfclub sehr freundliches und hilfsbereites Personal. Der Shuttle Service nach Funchal und zum Golfplatz ist sehr gut.

It was a great stay, warm welcome upon arriving and great experience in the Oxalis.
Minor problems.
- Booked transfer to Golf course was not communicated to drive
- Booked spa treatment was booked for wrong day
- Room was very noisy especially in the evening and mornings. you can hear every word of people in the driveway
- Ants in bathroom.
- Broken doorhandle in room.

We loved our room, the food, service, grounds, walk to the golf clubhouse terrace. Everything! Just the smallest comment: dinners outdoors (and breakfasts!) were amazing; it would be nice to vary the menu every few days. We "ran out" of new items to try after 4-5 days.

We can’t wait to come back! The property has so much to offer between the gardens, property tour, gorgeous buildings and relaxing spaces, spa, etc. The staff were wonderfully attentive and everything about our stay was elegant without being pretentious. Everything was so comfortable, clean, and we appreciated the touches like turndown service, gift upon check in, and free breakfast. There was nothing more we could have asked for. The only suggestions we could make are for the more casual restaurant to be open until 10pm and without reservations needed, and perhaps consider less flat bed pillows in the rooms. Thank you for an amazing stay!

Hôtel à l’écart de la ville (15 min en voiture ) on y ressent une forme de quiétude
Personnels gentils et attentifs, seul bémol sur la réception ou l accueil et le départ ne sont pas digne d un 5 étoiles pour nous (explique peux de choses , assez expéditif , …)
Parking assez restreint cela a été certains soirs un soucis
Piscine très agréable, manque juste un vrai service de bar

Observations constructives : malgré avoir annoncé à plusieurs reprises notre arrivée tôt (10h30) nous avons dû encore attendre 1h30 notre chambre alors que nous étions épuisé avec notre fille .
Aussi nous avons pu profiter malheureusement du SPA dans son entièreté car le hamam était en maintenance , dommage durant l’ensemble du séjour (10jours).
Enfin, s’agissant du restaurant , le dîner buffet barbecue n’a pas était à la hauteur des attentes (viandes et poissons froids, cuissons aléatoires …) et a été complètement en décalage avec l’ensemble des prestations des autres soirs . Avis partagés par de nombreux convives .
Mention spéciale pour LUIS qui est une personne formidable et attentionnée surtout à l’égard des enfants . Nous avons apprécié sa présence.

Checked-in to the hotel and was met with a broken glass in the bedroom that slipped by housekeeping. The carpet had not heen vacunes and i stepped on glass when stepping out of the shower. Shared this information with the moody receptionist who did not seem at all apologetic, didn’t even stutter a “Sorry” and said “Ok, someone will go clean it up.” My husband expresses his discontent with the response and only then did the receptionist come to our dinner table to offer his apologies and a complimentary drink at dinner. The captain of service at Oxalis was AMAZING and attentive. Earlier in the day, my husband called to ask if our room was ready and asked if the hotel restaurants were open for lunch. We asked specifically about Balancal, to which they forgot to mentioned the restaurant was closed for a private event. My husband and I walked all the way to the restaurant to be met with a closed dining room. Rather disappointing. We booked this 5-star hotel for our honeymoon and quite frankly, received more detailed and impressive service at a different 4-star hotel on the island. The room cleaning was sub-par, shower needs a deep clean, no organizing whatsoever of items in the room (needless to say I don’t expect room service to fold my clothes but clearing dirty plates would’ve been nice). On two or three days we came back to the hotel arojnd 4pm after having left at 9am to an unmade room. Never have I ever stayed at a hotel that didn’t get around to cleaning the room before 12pm. Unbelievable from a 5-star hotel. The best thing about the property is the property itself and its uniqueness. Also quite off-putting that almost every activity on-site has an extra fee (e.g. Yoga).

A Casa Velha do Palheiro é um espaço enorme, onde predomina a tranquilidade e a natureza. Os jardins são fantásticos, possibilitando excelentes passeios.
O bem receber é uma característica comum a todo o staff.
O pequeno almoço é muito bom, com diversidade e qualidade de produtos. Há várias opções para refeições ao longo do dia.

The hotel is set in beautiful grounds and the staff are very friendly and attentive. The waiting service could be hit and miss and could be slow.
However, the change to the Half Board menu was very poorly executed, without explanation or consultation. The menu is fairly repetitive anyway but I don't expect to stay at a five star hotel and be offer a choice of meat or fish every night.
I found the choice better at the golf club, service quicker, view better and cheaper. I would teturn for a short break but not half board.

- Concernant le spa : le hamam a été en panne pendant les dix jours de notre sejour, lors de la resa du soin, un tips de 10% est automatiquement ajouté avant que le soin soit effectué (on a l'impression qu on nous force la main).
- concernant l'espace sport : la salle de sport est ridiculement petite et peu adaptée au besoin il y a un rameur un tapis de course et pas d'espace : c'est survendu et ce n'est pas une salle de sport. Le terrain de tennis est payant (25€), c'est un peu mesquin
- piscine : pas de bar sur place.
- chambres : les clients sortant du restaurant ne devraient pas sortir devant les chambres car les discussions sont très bruyantes. Le personnel pourrait les orienter vers l'autre sortie existante pour accéder au parking. Les toutes petites serviettes n'étaient pas remises automatiquement tous les jours il a fallu en demander deux ou trois fois de suite.
- Concernant le restaurant la traduction du menu en français ce n'est pas bonne par exemple parrot fish a été traduit en perroquet. C'est tellement mal traduit qu'on ne comprend pas le menu et lorsque l'on a signalé ce problème on a l'impression que tout le maitre d'hotel s'en moque. La partie snack est beaucoup trop chère par rapport a la taille des portions.
- Les extérieurs sont très bien entretenus certains membres du personnel sont très très agréables et les personnes qui s'occupent des chambres sont très gentilles.
Séjour globalement très agréable mais de toute modification pourrait être apporté facilement pour que le sentiment global soit meilleur.

Nous avons passé un excellent séjour dans ce lieu calme et reposant. Le personnel était charmant et très attentif, plein de petites attentions adorables (mot de bienvenue, vin de Madère, pâtisseries locales, chocolats, etc.). La suite « Conde de Carvalhal » était magnifique, très spacieuse et décorée avec goût. Le bar dans l’esprit british est agréable et les connaisseurs d’alcools et de liqueurs raffinées ne seront pas déçus. Enfin la piscine est élégante et bien chauffée. Petit bémol , manque de présence pour servir des boissons ou des snacks autour de la piscine.
Mais cela n’enlève rien à la qualité de l’établissement et des équipes.
À découvrir absolument !

This was our seventh visit to Casa Velha and I booked by email directly with them, not by phone. We have always thoroughly enjoyed our stays , since 2011, and will continue to visit every two years until we are no longer able.
We have always had a lovely welcome and restful and peaceful stay. It was refreshing to see familiar staff and meet new members of the team, all of whom were friendly and helpful.
We very much enjoyed seeing the changes since our last visit, some of which were very subtle and some very noticeable, but all of which serve to make the guest feel more at home and part of the ambiance of the property.
We wish all of the team well and look forward to seeing them in 2027.

The casa Velha do PALHEIRO is a very nice place to stay.
The property is wonderful, there is a warm and quiet swimming-pool, and you can get lost in the beautiful gardens.
Even though we are not into playing golf, we enjoyed the vastness of the domain regardless.
The rooms and bathrooms were spacious and clean.
We enjoyed the restaurant and the breakfast is delicious.
Both the hotel and restaurant staff are professional and friendly.
We would love to come back.

I had one issue with a small item on the exterior of my luggage which went missing during my tour visit. I suspect the item was initially taken, but my trip leader spoke with the staff and it was later "found" but had a portion missing. That bothered me, because I was not sure of the seccurity of my possessions at the hotel. It would have been almost impossible to come loose from my luggage unless it was intentionally removed. But this I cannot prove.

Beautifully located property in a very quiet and picturesque part of the hills above Funchal.
We stayed at this property in 2000 for our honeymoon and this was our first visit back - we have visited Madeira on one other occasion in the intervening period.
Very relaxing environment and friendly staff, the hotel is intimate and very well appointed, in a great location on The Blandy Estate and next to a very impressive golf course.

We holiday here once a year because it's relaxing and comfortable with beautiful surroundings and exceptional staff. This year, we were delayed by 3 days in leaving due to wind conditions at the airport. The hotel staff were so kind and helpful in what was a very stressful and difficult situation, ensuring we had somewhere to stay even when we arrived unannounced at 3am!

Took my husband for a weeks holiday , having previously visited with my daughter. He loved it. Our room was in the main house and was beautiful. We had a wonderful holiday but my only complaints would be:
1 the breakfasts are not as good as when I visited in Sept 2023 as there is a lot less choice now
2. About 4 more parasols are needed around the pool as each pair of dinners should have a shade
3. Not the hotel’s fault but there were two groups of visitors - a German golf group and an American walking party - who were very noisy around the pool and at dinner, spoiling the peace and ambience for the other guests.

Wie auch schon beim letzten Besuch, haben wir uns im Hotel und den angeschlossenen Möglichkeiten sehr wohl gefühlt. Der direkte Anschluss an den Golfplatz und die Möglichkeit für non-limit golf sind herausragend. Der Golfplatz ist anspruchsvoll aber wunderschön. Der Blick von der Terrasse des Klubhauses spektakulär. Der botanischen Garten von Palheiro ist sehr schön und für Hotelgäste frei und den ganzen Tag nutzbar.

It was just fantastic. Everybody very helpful, especially the restaurant staff, from Luis to Charlotte, the trainee, including Romeu, Broglio (?) and Sara. Nothing was a problem and the availability of a testing menu was a great idea. Every guest should try it!

The property is absolutely fabulous, inside and out. The situation, the buildings and the gardens convey a feeling of exclusivity and seclusion. The service could not be faulted - all staff seemed concerned that guests should have the best experience possible. All were charming, obliging and efficient. This is undoubtedly a very special place and probably the best hotel we've ever stayed in

Le cadre est enchanteur - que ce soit les bâtiments ou jardins alentour - dont le très beau Palheiro Garden. Tout est très bien entretenu et assez serein - l’établissement étant à l’écart du tumulte de la ville. La vue depuis le restaurant du golf voisin est à couper le souffle. Le système de navettes quotidiennes pour descendre sur Funchal très pratique. Personnel aux petits soins mais conservant une certaine simplicité. Petit déjeuner varié et de qualité.

The room was too noisy. The Oxalis Restaurant did not live up to expectations. My steak was not cooked as requested. I sent it back. The desserts were poor. We chose not to eat here. The gardens were fabulous.

Séjour de rêve dans une atmosphère très chaleureuse presque amicale ! Le chef du restaurant Oxalys nous a régalé durant toute la semaine, à la hauteur d’un étoilé Michelin. Sa brigade menée de main de maître cuisine sous nos yeux dans une ambiance très sympathique. Les plats servis sont absolument exquis et les vins choisis par le chef de rang sont parfaitement en adéquation avec nos goûts. Tout le personnel de l’établissement est d’un très bon niveau et d’une gentillesse remarquable. Seul bémol pour l’entretien des salles de bain (des oublis divers mais rien de grave). Très belle demeure, un parc fleuris et entretenu avec goût, un golf à couper le souffle : tous les ingrédients pour un séjour inoubliable ! Merci et bravo à tout le personnel

Nous avons vraiment apprécié ce séjour, l'ambiance tres anglaise est dépaysante. Le parc ainsi que le magnifique jardin botanique , la vue plongeante sur la cote de Funchal depuis le tres beau golf,participent à en faire un sejour attractif et reposant.
Toute fois nous aurions souhaité plus de choix et de souplesse pour les diners sur place, avec la possibilitè de manger leger ou moins conventionnel.
Cela explique la note globale de 4 qui sinon aurait ete de 5...
Le petit déjeuner est parfait.

This hotel is an oasis of calm and sophistication on an island which is quite frenetic. Every detail is attended to. The staff are warm and welcoming. Bernardo and Sonia were particularly helpful and pleasant.
The restaurant Oxtalis provides as fine a dining experience as anywhere in the world. The chef, Gonçalo, is extremely competent and talented.

The hotel and grounds are beautiful. Very relaxing. The customer care is very good and the staff make you feel valued. It is remote and would recommend perhaps a 3 night stay. Oxalis is a lovely restaurant with fabulous food served by very attentive staff. Luis the manager is ever present and attentive.
A couple of hiccups on this stay, power surge when we arrived so no power for an hour or so and internet intermittent for the first day. After this power and internet absolutely fine. Bizarrely a couple of days dirty plates left in our room and towels taken and not replaced, toiletries and tea , coffee not replaced. Reported on the second day and rectified within the hour. It didn't spoil the stay but given the pride the hotel has , I did not expect this to happen. I would recommend but undecided if I would stay again.
Special mention to staff who went above and beyond and enhanced the stay. Carolina on reception, Luis in the restaurant, the shuttle driver Marisio ( Sorry if this name is not spelt correctly) David the chef. Many thanks julie

We enjoyed every aspect of our stay. it exceeded our expectations. The staff are the key to our experience, everyone was kind, pleasant and went above and beyond. We completed with tasting menu at Oxalis and was once in a lifetime experience. Was one of the best meals and experiences we have had traveling. We enjoyed the intimate sating and opportunity to connect with chef and supportive staff. We hope to be back again.

We had a wonderful time staying at the hotel. Luis was an amazing hotel manager and greeted us every single morning and evening. It seemed like he never went home and worked 24 hours around the clock. I wish I remembered the other staff members names because everyone went above and beyond. The woman at the front desk on the day of our departure was phenomenal and went above and beyond for us when we realized our transfer to the airport was not arriving. Again, I wish I remembered her name because she contacted our travel agency, taxi companies and even got the hotel manager to agree to have the hotel shuttle take us to the airport so we wouldn't miss our flight. I will forever be grateful to her. We have traveled to over 80 countries and without a doubt the staff at this hotel and the accommodations were phenomenal. I would recommend this establishment to anyone visiting Madeira. We loved our stay so much, we plan to return again, very soon.

We greatly enjoyed our stay.
The breakfast and general service was excellent.
in the evening we eat twice at the Vista Balancal (golf clu)b and the food there was very good, particularly for my wife who is a lifelong vegetarian - the tofu and couscous bowl was a very balanced wholesome meal.
We also eat in The Restaurant Oxalis one evening where the food was tremendous but with one exception. This was the main course for my wife which was the pumpkin selection - recommended for her as a vegetarian. What there was of this course was lovely but it was absolutely minimalist and completely inadequate as a meal. Somehow I think the chef must believe that vegetarians are on a permanent starvation diet - they are not - one quarter of the world population are vegetarian and they need protein and carbohydrates just like everyone else! I don’t raise this as a criticism of the chefs skills - the food was truly excellent - it was just not a sustainable meal for someone who lives every day as a vegetarian and has done all her life and needs to be fed properly.
Having said that we greatly look forward to returning in the future to this fantastic and truly beautiful hotel.

Die Lage, das ehrwürdige Haus, die Anbauten (Golf- und Gardenwing), der Park, die Ruhe, der Service und die wundervolle Bepflanzung waren echte Erholung.! Abends gab es immer zwei Tage die gleiche Auswahl des Menüs, für meinen Geschmack zu wenig Gemüse und keine Salate, das wäre vielleicht verbesserungswürdig... aber auch nur um dann echt perfekt zu sein :-) . Danke für die vielen netten Menschen in Ihrem Haus, die alles für unsere Zufriedenheit gemacht haben!

This is a very special property with the most magnificent garden where you can spend many hours and a wonderfully relaxing ambience. The staff are very friendly but professional staff. The Manager, Catia, must be very good. Luis in the Oxalis was outstanding and a real pro. The golf course is beautiful and overall this was a wonderful experience.

From our arrival we were welcomed and felt very comfortable. The weather wasn’t good the first few days but the delicious food, excellent staff and cosy surroundings made up for that. Once we were able to explore outside we enjoyed the beautiful gardens. The golf course was very enjoyable (and hilly) with lovely views. We will definitely return.

We were looking for a quiet week in a comfortable and attractive hotel and this we found at Casa Velho. The staff were very warm and helpful; efficient without being intrusive. The Oxalis restaurant produced some exceptional food. There was a good range of local wines. Breajkfast was excellent. The gardens were really lovely and as good as any in Madeira though more modest than some.

I thought the hotel was wonderful and I thoroughly enjoyed my one week stay and loved the gardens and golf course. The food and service was extremely good.
However, I only had hot water one evening (between 5-7pm) which is not good enough for a top hotel or any hotel. My friends also did not have hot water in the evenings, only tepid water. Also, my bath was not cleaned each day. I was in room 41.

Das sehr gepflegte Haus und die wundersachöne Gartenanlage machen den Aufenthalt auch für Nicht Golfspieler zu einem Erlebnis. Die umsichtige und liebevolle Betreuung durch das Personal wurde von uns sehr geschätzt. Besonders gut gefiel und auch der Shuttleservice nach Funchal. So konnte man gut das Auto stehen lassen. Alles in Allem hat uns der Aufenthalt sehr gefallen.
Ob wir noch mal nach Madeira kommen, wisen wir allerdings nicht. Wir sind schon etwas älter und nicht mehr ganz so gut zu Fuß für die anspruchsvollen Wanderungen.

The property is unique. It has old world elegance, beauty, and charm, Similar to an old english manor house in the country with the added benefit of modern facilities and spectacular views and gardens and its own golf course. The attempt to raise the cuisine to Michelin standard on a consistent basis is not yet working but all other aspects of service and staff attention are first class. It remains on our list of return hotels.

This was our 3rd visit to Casa Velha hotel which speaks for itself. The main attractions being a welcoming staff, a lovely junior suite room overlooking the garden and terrace, amazing dining and superb botanical gardens adjacent to the hotel. Also a heated outdoor swimming pool and alternative dining at the golf clubhouse were available. We look forward to our next visit to enjoy the peaceful and tranquil surroundings.

This was our second visit to Casa Velha. We'll be back! It is a place of peace, beauty and incredible hospitality. The gardens are beautiful and inspiring. The walks around the area, the guided tours around the gardens and the sign-up tours of the island are just so special. It was like coming home again wheb we arrived this year. The improvements in the kitchen/cheffing facilities mean that the cooking team feel part of the whole team. The heated outdoor pool is a wondrful addition this year. Thank you to all the wonderful staff and management team. We'll be back!

Following a complaint the chef went that extra mile to ensure his personal commitment in the provision of really outstanding meals for the following six days. A really passionate representative of the catering team who happened to be also charming and considerate of our needs. We could not commend him and his team highly enough. An incredible place with a stunning property and a magnificent garden – it was a pleasure to stroll around with our dog. The overall atmosphere is very appealing: tranquility, privacy, and a mature guest crowd, which is a huge plus as everyone respects each other’s space.
I lowered the rating only because of the poorly designed “Do Not Disturb” and “Please Clean the Room” door signs. The wind kept flipping them, and as a result, we were woken up several times in the morning despite setting “Do Not Disturb,” and our room wasn’t cleaned when we requested it.
We didn’t make it to the restaurant because of inconsistencies with room service—ordered a Caesar salad with grilled chicken but received boiled chicken instead, and the same issue happened with the sandwiches. Everything was tasty and well-prepared, just not what we expected.
We would love to return and will definitely recommend the hotel. The wine was fantastic—we ordered some in Madrid and have already shared it with family!

I would just mention that prices in the restaurants are very high especially in Oxsalis. The higher the price , the more expectation , and eventually disappointment! To keep the restaurants busy maybe you should think about a better price policy!

I had a delightful two-day stay during which I felt at home. The atmosphere was delightful, the grounds were magnificent, and their history fascinating. The service was impeccable and extremely friendly. The food was exquisite (the best gastronomic experience I had on the island), and the Spa treatment was incredible.
I only had one problem: the room’s malfunctioning radiator made a lot of noise during the night.

My room had no working heating system and I had to wait in order to have a proper radiator working.
My room was not soundproof at all ( exhaust engine in the landing extremely loud ). I was never able to relax in my room .
Prior to my arrival I was sent an email inquiring about my food preferences.
I confirmed being vegan ( no dairy ). At my arrival there was neither vegan milk nor vegan yogurt and I had to wait 3 days for it.
Water:
The bottled water provided has a strange taste .
I recommend to use Atlantida instead ( in rooms and at meals).
I visit at least 4 Relais Chateaux during the year.
I am very fond of Casa Velha but this time highly disappointed with mentioned issues.
When a customer ( especially returning customer ) checks in, the allocated room should be in mint and faultless conditions.

Very peaceful property with beautiful gardens and an interesting mini museum. The staff were very friendly.
Negatives are that the water would not stay hot in the shower and the restaurant charged €6 for filtered water which is provided free in the room.

Très belle maison de caractère, entretien parfait, décoration intérieure un peu surannée, le salon ne m’a pas donné envie de venir m’y installer. Le jardin privé est une beauté avec un petit bijou: une chapelle privée. Le parcours de golf et sa vue sont superbes. Manager et personnel en cuisine irréprochable. En chambre le service pourrait être amélioré : ce serait agréable d’avoir les verres d eau usagés changés chaque jour et les tasses de café sans le demander ainsi que mon pyjama replié sur le lit par exemple. Et il serait plus utile d’avoir un kit de coton à démaquiller/coton tiges plutôt que deux bonnets de bains dans la salle de bain.
Merci à toute l’équipe attentionnée qui m’a permis de passer un séjour ressourçant et relaxant.

This is the fourth time we've stayed over the past five years and have always enjoyed the experience. We are golfers and the location is therefore excellent. We've been visiting Madeira on and off over the past forty years and find this hotel suits us very well. There have been recent upgrades to bedrooms and public rooms over the past two years but the character of the hotel has been maintained.
Overall a very nice comfortable hotel in an outstanding position away from the hubub of Funchal.

The environment is fantastic and well treated.
The Golfcourse with a wonderful view and the Terrasse of the clubhouse as well.
Every single person (employee) was friendly, helpful and very "warm". Different languages were also well spoken.
I felt from the first minute welcome, well treated with respect and gentleness. As well as my dog, which is not always the case!!! Therefore a big thank you!!

Our overall experience lived up to our expectations. However, we were disappointed to learn after booking that the open air swimming pool and surrounding area were closed for renovations. As a result for most of our stay the normal peaceful atmosphere around the hotel was disturbed by the works.

The first 3 days were just what we needed,relaxing an and peaceful . The staff were outstanding in every aspect of their work. We were very disappointed with the unexpected work on the pool area. The constant repetitive drilling noise was awful and did spoil our time with you. There was no apology until the third day of the works , merely an explanation which we felt was was poor and disappointing . Had we known this work was going to be happening we would not have booked a stay. We presume this work was planned as it was obviously extensive and was going to take several weeks according to a staff member we asked. We came for a peaceful week and unfortunately that was really spoiled by the work. A leaf blower was also used for several hours one morning which along with the constant drilling work at the pool made for a noisy and disruptive day. Our room was opposite the kitchen, we could hear the staff putting away dishes etc after dinner service which was intrusive at 10.30/11pm. Also we could hear staff talking in the early morning and late evening , could you perhaps make them aware that residents staying in the rooms opposite the kitchen can hear them and to be quieter, this would be much appreciated by your future guests. On our final night we were woken at 4am by a wedding party guest arguing loudly with a taxi driver about the cost of the fare. I had to go and ask them to be quiet . We’re surprised this was not heard by hotel staff unless you don’t have anyone in attendance at night. The hotel, grounds and staff were exceptional, the noise from the pool works however did leave us feeling much less rested than we should have done and left us feeling disappointed with our stay. We would return but would make enquiries before booking as to whether any maintenance work was planned.

The charm of an English Country Hotel set in the beautiful sub-tropical gardens of the Palheiro Estate with a challenging golf course on hand. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff who are keen to make your stay as restful as possible. They are without exception engaging, accommodating and highly professional with many being multi-lingual. We noticed that many guests were returning visitors which is surely the greatest endorsement of all. The food was also of the highest standard and the chef and his team took the greatest pride in creating and delivering beautifully presented, delicious dishes. The waiting staff were also very knowledgeable and keen to advise on the appropriate wine to accompany dinner. We didn’t try the spa during our stay but spoke to other guests who had and had only good things to say. The hotel also operate two shuttles an hour to the golf course and back as well as a daily shuttle in to Funchal. All in all Casa Velha exceeded our expectations and once the tennis court resurfacing has happened, it will soon be hard to beat.

Particularly noteworthy is the restaurant's excellent cuisine with a new kitchen team, which could best be described as 'the Madeiran take on fine dining.' At the time of our visit, the restaurant had not yet been awarded a Michelin star, but it's something to expect in the future! A specialty here, for example, is the elegant ice creams, which are not only found in desserts. Very creative and flavorful!

We enjoyed our stay at Palheiro for one week but to reach the high standard of Relais & Châteaux we know from other hotels they have to go a bit higher. Our main issue is the menu of Casa Velha Palheiro restaurant for half board which is the same from friday untill sunday! If you are a meat eater you have to order 3 days the same dishes ( fish 2 choices and vegetarian 2 choices) Monday and tuesday is same menu and wednesday and thursday. The quality of the ingredients is very good but the seasoning could be a bit bolder. The desserts were top! The room was fine ( good bed, good size of room, enough closets,..) but the renewal of the bathroom should perhaps be scheduled (traces of use). Staff is very kind and helpfull. You need a car if you want to explore more than the estate. There were a few mistakes on our final bill but they were kindly corrected (diner on evening of arrival extra charged although we payed half board, diner in the Balancal restaurant charged although we payed half board and golf greenfee charged double). We were not informed upon arrival that we could also eat at the Balancal restaurant in the half board and when we asked for it ourselves the amount for which we could order was wrong communicated. We were told 50 pp (which sounded logic because the value of the half board menu in Palheiro was 53 euro pp ) and when we received the final bill it appeared to be only 25 euro pp.

We booked our stay through a specialist tour operator because we didn't have any experience of Madeira or how to organise sport fishing. Casa Velha was recommended to us as part of their service. We asked for somewhere special because it was also our silver wedding anniversary - it certainly exceeded expectation. Nothing was too much trouble and I would say that the consistant level of service and care they provided in relation to cost is rarely found these days. The grounds are superb and add to the atmosphere of luxury, a place you can relax in and feel welcome. All of the staff had the rare gift of being both professional but really friendly and every one of them spoke English which we so appreciated. A wonderful experience we intend to repeat as soon as we can. A jewel in Madeira's crown.

Globalmente a experiência foi negativa. Tinha feito reserva de quarto e de jantar através de email que foi confirmado pela equipa de reservas. Quando fiz check-in no hotel essa informação não tinha sido transmitida. Voltei a fazer a mesma reserva para jantar. Quando cheguei ao restaurante na hora marcada mais uma vez a equipa não sabia da reserva e ainda me disseram que devia ter reservado (algo que já tinha feito duas vezes). Após terem arranjado uma mesa estive 30 minutos à espera que alguém viesse perguntar o que queríamos jantar. Tal não aconteceu e dado a longa espera tive de pedir a um funcionário que trouxesse o couvert ao que me respondeu que ainda não estava pronto porque o pão estava a ser feito. Acredito que num estabelecimento deste nível não é uma situação aceitável. Quando trouxeram a ementa só existia em inglês (ainda estamos em Portugal e a língua oficial é o Português). No dia seguinte, ao pequeno-almoço, sou informado que devido a obras a sala de refeições (onde se encontram as mesas e cadeiras para os hóspedes tomar o pequeno almoço) está separada da sala onde se encontra o buffet pelo que tenho de me servir e fazer uma longa caminhada pela rua até à sala de refeições. E naturalmente terei de fazer isto sempre que quiser algo de novo. Uma vez que estava com uma criança com dois anos conseguiram arranjar uma pequena mesa na sala mesmo ao lado do buffet. À medida que mais hóspedes foram chegado e se deparando com esta situação, começaram a surgir reclamações pelo que decidiram colocar mais mesas e cadeira na sala onde me encontrava. Mais uma vez não acho aceitável esta situação. É má gestão e planeamento algo pouco compreensível num estabelecimento que deveria primar pela excelência.

Echte 5 Sterne auf Madeira! Das Personal macht den Unterschied. Stets aufmerksam, hilfsbereit und zuvorkommend. Jeder geht für den Gast die Extrameile. Sehr kinderfreundlich. Kinder sind absolut willkommen. Küche und Keller auf sehr gutem Niveau. Zimmer bequem und sehr sauber. Einziger Verbesserungspunkt: Keine Mückengitter vor den Fenstern.

My friend and I stayed at the Casa Velha Pado Palheiro in Madeira and it was excellent with excellence on display. The hotel has a wonderful location, above the city (great views) but close enough for you to go in at ease. The grounds are immaculate and there is a feeling of peace and spaciousness. The rooms are beautifully appointed, and facilities lovely. There's an outdoor swimming pool,as well as indoor pool and spa with facilities. The restaurants celebrate Portuguese and Madeiran food, and the view from the restaurant at the golf course is incredible.
What really separates the Casa though is the staff, they're truly excellent. Helpful, knowledgeable, friendly and clearly take pride in their jobs and their hotel. Andre,Caroline, Reumo and Katja, thank you.

This is an excellent place to go and stay at. The restaurant service is the only downside, the dishes are well executed, but the staff seems to lack training for the role. Also the wait time is incredibly long. Nevertheless the whole "package" makes it worth the visit.

We stayed at Casa Velha Do Palheiro for 9 nights on a half board basis. The hotel has a unique charm of a bygone era, steeped in history dating back 200 years, and is quiet and peaceful. The restaurant is excellent offering a 5 start dining experience. My only comment is that it is a bit lacking regarding vegetarian/vegan option.

I was excited to explore Madeira Island during my visit. Unfortunately (or fortunately), Casa Velha was so amazing that I barely wanted to leave the property! It was magical to wake up every morning and walk around the gardens, have a coffee or a drink on the lawn and gaze out over the ocean.
The food at the restaurant was so astounding that we had dinner there 3 out of our 5 nights in Madeira. We are so excited to come back!

Peaceful and tranquil, the hotel is set in beautiful gardens; a pleasure to return to after a busy day out.
A wonderful breakfast is served under the sun umbrellas overlooking the lawns or in the setting of the elegant dining room by polite and attentive staff.
The bedrooms are very generous in size, as was the bathroom, and both well equipped with thoughtfully placed sockets, good storage, and lovely skin/bathing MB products provided. The bed was huge and comfortable. We loved the Spa: sauna and steam rooms, warm and cool pools, fluffy robes etc.
The hotel itself is exceptionally well run, a staff member is always on hand to help which we much appreciated.
Only downside was that as our room was on the ground floor with foliage to the front, it didn't benefit from day light until later in the day.

Hier kann man Ruhe wie abwechselnde Aktionen und Annehmlichkeiten genießen sowie die herrliche Landschaft, die immer wieder neue Seherlebnisse bietet. Besonders hervorzuheben ist nicht nur die Qualität des Frühstücks, sondern auch die besondere Gastfreundschaft, auf die man trifft. Jeder der dort arbeitenden Menschen, sei es im Service oder auch im Garten, für den Shuttlebereich oder im Spa-Bereich macht den Aufenthalt besonders wertvoll. Ihnen gebührt mein besonderer Dank.

The staff were very attentive without being intrusive. The venue was very well maintained including the extensive gardens.
The food offered in the restaurant was most enjoyable. We achieved exactly what we set out to do which was to relax in a quiet beautiful setting with great food and wine.

Ein wunderschönes und ruhiges Ambiente mit persönlicher und professioneller Betreuung. Alleine die Zimmerreinigung könnte etwas besser sein (Baddusche wurde in 1 Woche nicht sichtbar gereinigt, Haare blieben am Boden und wurden nicht oder zumindest nicht ordentlich entfernt).

Many positives about stay especially property and restaurant/bar staff outstanding but to be 5* hotel attention to detail is often lacking. At check-in golf voucher should be ready, if arrival early in the morning propose breakfast or at least coffee and croissant, no quality control after room cleaning,napkins when serving drinks, only peanuts seriously ? Room 30 never again due to noise from gardeners, cleaning ladies and children above. Very strange to have storage rooms next & under room.

J ai envie de parler d excellence. Tant par l accueil, la réactivité, disponibilité, serviabilité et j en oublie. Je souhaite surtout souligner que lors d une soirée dégustation de Madère, nous avons pu échanger avec Catia, manager de hôtel qui nous a demandé si quelque chose pouvait être amélioré, nous avons suggéré deux ou trois choses et le lendemain, certaines étaient déjà appliquées. After many decades traveling the world, I finally had a chance to go to Madeira. I had no idea there was such a magical place like Casa Velha do Palheiro!
It was definitely what we needed. Away from the hustle and bustle for some rest and relaxation…and FOOD!
Property aside, this review is about the staff. When you talk about luxury, it always come doesn’t to the people. We had the pleasure of being greeted by Joana who took care of our itinerary and experiences. The whole process was flawless and for the first time in a while, I really did not stress about a thing. From spa to culinary experiences to island experiences, Joana and her team know how to deliver a luxury experience.
I literally can write a novel about this place.
Thank you Joana and team for taking care of us and I can’t wait to come back soon!!!

Absolutely stunning property within beautiful grounds and gardens.
Having been to Porto Santo for 3 days, we flew to Madeira for the final 3 days of our trip. We stayed in the John Burden Blandy suite which exceeded our expectations. The suite had a small entrance area with a desk and chest of drawers unit. The main bedroom was incredibly spacious with an emperor sized bed and lounge area. The bathroom had a stand alone roll-top bath and separate hot rain shower. The room overlooked the gardens and chapel.
The gardens were immaculate - some beautiful walks through the gardens and huge championship golf course to the reservoirs, koi ponds and Tea House. There were 2 restaurants onsite and a lounge area with outdoor seating overlooking stunning scenery.
The breakfast was a continental buffet with the option of ordering various cooked breakfast items - all were delicious. The hotel catered well for my dietary requirements (gluten/dairy free).
Staff were incredibly friendly, helpful and attentive - nothing was too much trouble.
The property was a short drive away to the main area of Funchal. We were glad we hired a car for this trip to enable us to explore more of the island. I did run to Funchal from the hotel which was a 7km steep descent!
A short uphill walk from the hotel is the Levada Dos Tornos which lead 8km to the cable cars - a beautiful walk. I continued on to the Levada Da Serra Do Faial into Quinta Das Almas to complete 13km through stunning forests and scenery.

La situation et la proximité de jardins extraordinaires,les reliquats de charme colonial et la gentillesse du personnel font que cet établissement a clairement sa place dans le portefeuille Relais et Châteaux. Attention au niveau du restaurant et de la restauration qui vire un peu a la cuisine de pension et aux repas de groupe pour les golfeurs et n’est pas a la hauteur de la competition a Funchal.

Deux petits bémols : une famille avec deux enfants en bas âge (brassards et bouées ) dans la piscine intérieure du spa…. Et un groupe de joueurs de golf ( une quinzaine ) au restaurant de la Casa , ce qui ne contribue pas au calme ….

We loved this property and the lovely hotel staff! The breakfast and property were superb. Check in and out was a breeze with kindness at every corner. The only issue we discovered was the dangerous road leading up to the property, which gave us a couple of scares in our rental SUV and gave taxi services issues as well (reported to us as reasons as to why they typically do not have drivers readily available for the location).

Au petit déjeuner le dernier jour , nous avons attendu 30 minutes la commande de nos oeufs , il a fallut le faire remarquer car personne ne sans n’inquiétait ! De plus au Spa , le hamman est tombé en panne , le sauna brûlant impossible de m’y tenir plus de 3 minutes , et la piscine intérieure vide .. 😩

Un ancien manoir transformé admirablement en hôtel, au milieu d'un immense parc planté de fleurs et d'arbres exotiques avec, dans le lointain, l'océan ! Voilà de quoi rêver !
Sur le plan hôtelier, on approche de la perfection. Le personnel est professionnel et chaleureux. Les chambres sont spacieuses et bien décorées. Un seul bémol car, comme chacun sait, il n'y pas de compliments crédibles sans quelques critiques; L'isolation phonique des chambres est très insuffisante. C'est dommage ! Mais, globalement, l'hôtel et son personnel sont exceptionnels.

Das Hotel und der Garten sind wie eine Oase, in die man sich zurückziehen und sich optimal erholen kann. Besonders beeindruckt hat uns der Garten insbesondere der Altbaumbestand - ein Traum! Das Haus an sich ist äußerst gemütlich und in gutem Zustand. Wir kommen bestimmt wieder, wenn wir nochmals nach Madeira fahren.

La Casa Velha do Palheiro est nichée dans un grand parc paysager regorgeant de multiples essences d'arbres et de fleurs. C'est un ravissement pour les yeux que de s'échapper dans son parc et de découvrir ses jardins fleuris. L'hôtel est calme, confortable et l'équipe de service est aux petits soins. On aimerait y rester plus longtemps.

wunderschöne Lage, herrlicher Park, äußerst zuvorkommendes Personal (besonderen Dank an Luis u. Sarah, aber generell sehr nettes und aufmerksames Team), toller Service (shuttle service, Nature trail, manager cocktail usw.), Schöne Poolanlage, genügend Parkplätze.
Im Haupthaus ist es in manchen Bereichen sehr hellhörig. Beim Frühstück wäre etwas mehr Abwechslung bei Käse u. Wurst wünschenswert, ebenso sollten Haferflocken, Nüsse, etc. angeboten werden. Aber das sind nur Kleinigkeiten - ansonsten eine wunderbare Anlage um einen schönen Urlaub zu verbringen. Auf jeden Fall empfehlenswert!

Ein traumhaft gelegenes Hideaway. Es war unser 5. Besuch. Unsere Suite sehr schön und geschmackvoll renoviert, das Bad komplett erneutert. Auf die Badewanne hätten wir verzichten können zugunsten mehr Stauraum im Bad. Wir haben uns rundherum wohl gefühlt. Nur die Qualität des Frühstücksbuffets ließ sehr zu wünschen übrig. Wir brauchen kein riesiges Buffet, aber wir legen Wert auf sehr gute Qualität. Diese war bei den 3 Müslisorten (billigste Industrieware), bei der Wurst- und Käseauswahl nicht gegeben. 14 Tage die gleichen 3-4 Käsesorten, da wäre mehr Abwechslung und hochwertigeres Angebot in einem 5 Sterne Hotel angemessen. Auch ein wenig Dekoration der dargebotenen Platten und auch mehrere Aufstrichvarianten ausser Butter wären wünschenswert gewesen. Leider hat uns auch die Qualität des abendlichen Diners überhaupt nicht überzeugt. Wir essen keine Fleisch, also mußten wir uns mit den Fischangeboten und den 3 vegetarischen Varianten zufrieden geben. Die servierten Fische waren samt und sonders nicht frisch, sondern hart und trocken und wurden einmal sogar verdorben und übelst riechend serviert. Das hätte schon in der Küche bei der Zubereitung und spätestens beim Servieren auffallen müssen. Die 3 vegetarischen Varianten sahen trotz der blumigen Beschreibung in der Speisekarte aus wie Schonkost im Krankenhaus. Der Sous Vide gegarte Fenchel war so hart und zäh, dass man ihn kaum schneiden konnte und auch hier fehlte jegliche Garnitur und das für knapp 20 EUR. Nein, das hat uns alles, anders als bei unseren vorigen Aufenthalten, gar nicht überzeugt. Wir haben uns nach frischem Salat und Gemüse gesehnt und wirklich frischem Fisch. Wir waren nicht die einzigen Gäste, die nach einem Versuch das Restaurant nicht mehr aufgesucht haben.
Das ist sehr schade, denn es wäre viel gemütlicher die Abende im Hotel zu verbringen und nicht mit dem Taxi nach Funchal fahren zu müssen, um frische, lokale Speisen zu erhalten, die man auf einer grünen Insel im Atlantik erwartet.

The staff are the hotel's greatest asset - warm, friendly and helpful. The dining experience at the hotel has always been excellent but there now seems to be a new chef at Restaurant Vista Balancal who has changed the menu and is doing really good and interesting food which is a lovely contrast to the more formal approach at the Casa Velha.

S'agissant d'un R&C, nous savions que notre séjour serait très bien, mais à la casa Velha de Palheiro, ce fut plus que parfait dès la première minute : l'accueil très personnalisé, la gentillesse et la disponibilité du personnel, les attentions dans la chambre, notre généreux upgrading ...
Une belle demeure, des jardins magnifiques, des promenades dans la propriété... le dîner le soir sur la terrasse ou dans la salle, les petits déjeuners....Tout nous a plu, et nous serions bien restés davantage, c'est dire si nous nous y sentions si bien. Une des plus belles expériences des R&C, et nous en avons déjà un très grand nombre à notre actif chaque année. J'ajoute que l'hôtel a tenu compte de notre statut d'amis des R&C, ce qui n'est pas toujours le cas dans les établissements en France.

An excellent choice of hotel for garden enthusiasts. The adjoining Palheiro Gardens are of great horticultural interest, and also very peaceful. A beautifully managed hotel with the highest standards of service and accommodation as well as the glorious grounds (even in the rain!). Warmly welcomed and addressed by name by all the staff - it seemed that everyone had a little time to spend with us. Our suite was spacious and charming and the welcome gift of Madeira was a treat. I loved that there were flowers in the room too. A special mention and thanks to margareda and luis for their humour and care.

Das Hotel liegt wunderschön in der Natur gelegen. Umgeben von einem Golfplatz hat man von dort einen tollen Blick auf Funchal.
Der Garten lädt zum Verweilen ein und man findet hier absolute Ruhe und Entspannung. Man hat kostenlosen Zugang zu den wunderschönen Palheiro Gardens. Unbedingt entdecken!!!
Der Service war wirklich sehr gut. Angefangen vom Empfang beim Check-In, ebenso im Restaurant und der Bar. Ein großes Dankeschön geht an dieser Stelle an Rosa und Luis!!!
Der eine oder andere Kollege darf noch etwas aufmerksamer sein, das haben wir in den Relais & Chateaux Häusern schon besser erlebt.
Die Zimmer sind in Ordnung. Manchmal fehlte uns etwas "Liebe zum Detail" (eine kleine Blume im Bad wäre schön gewesen). Die Betten waren leider schon durchgelegen und nicht so bequem.
Das SPA haben wir auch genutzt. Die Massage von Susanna war super! Auch die Ruheräume sind sehr ansprechend und wir haben uns wohl gefühlt.
Leider ist der Innenpool etwas in die Jahre gekommen und bräuchte eine Sanierung, daher haben wir dort auch keine Zeit verbracht.
Wir waren Mitte März auf Madeira. Das Wetter war leider noch etwas durchwachsen. Zu beachten ist hier, dass das Hotel auf 500 Höhenmeter liegt und immer 4° C weniger hat, als in Funchal. Sobald es regnet, wurde es schnell kühl.
Leider wurde es dann auch im Zimmer kühl. Da es sich um ein altes Herrenhaus handelt, gab es auch keine Heizung im Zimmer. Hätten wir an einigen Tagen aber gebrauchen können.
Alles in allem können wir das Hotel empfehlen.
Wir hatten einen schönen Urlaub mit kleinen Abstrichen.
Die Insel ist wunderschön und wir empfehlen Ausflüge nach Funchal (möglichst an Tagen, an denen keine Kreuzfahrtschiffe vor Anker liegen) und auch gerne in den Norden. Wunderschön ursprünglich und tolle Weinanbaugebiete.

Das Hotel ist wunderbar, das Abendmenü etwas zu hochpreisig.
Das Greenfee + Golfcar vom Golfplatz Palheiro ist zu teuer für den Hotelgast, die Ermäßigung ist zu gering. Ich arbeite selbst in einem Golfclub in Bayern und da sind die Greenfee Abkommen mit den Hotels wesentlich besser. Aber ein großes Lob an das überaus freundliches Personal vom Hotel und Golfclub Palheiro.
Wir möchten wieder kommen, falls das Golfen nicht zu teuer wird.

Une mention au manager de l hôtel qui a été excessivement réactif lorsque que notre ami s"est cassé le tibia . En moins de 24h il a fait poser des rampes sur toutes les marches entre chambres et restaurant et acheté un fauteuil roulant.
Super petit déjeuner le dernier jour préparé pour nous dès 6:30h pour cause d'avion à prendre .

Beautiful, so welcomed by all staff. Really made to feel very much at home in this tranquil peaceful beautiful setting. Could not have chosen better for the celebration on my 60th Birthday. I came along with a my very good friend Julia Gale who loves your hotel and has visited 15 times now!! Gardens were beautiful too! Love the little chapel and the Spa too of course. Just wish I could have done a little sunbathing beside the pool, but there is always next time!!

The staff and hotel are very good. It is a shame a senior manager is not on duty over the weekend to deal with any problems. A group were at the hotel and were not of the standard as the other guests. They were rude and demanding and did not adhere to the dress code. It would stop us staying at the hotel if groups of that type were allowed to almost take over the grounds.

A most pleasant week. The staff could not have been better, and generally speaking we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. If you wish to know how it could have been improved then I can only think of two things.
1. The dinner and lunch menus were quite limited, especially if you are on half-board.
2. The toilet paper is rather thin, poor quality.

I thought the jacuzzi and pool were very much below the hotel standards. All jacuzzi area was rotten tiles and the engines were not working. The pool is located in the shade is small and not heated. I would jot classify the resort as a “I sort and outside pool facilities available”. Unfortunately the shower in the suite un’idea has a very dangerous and slippery (and slightly cracked) marble floor which would b very dangerous.

The hotel was in in all general respects one of the best hotels we have stayed in around the world. It was old fashioned elegance and charm personified eminently suitable for an adult clientele seeking comfort and relaxation in elegant surroundings. The staff were welcoming, friendly and attentive to our needs, the accommodation was exceedingly comfortable, the food was of consistent high quality with a sufficiently varied menu. The spa was adequate and the external pool very attractive though it would benefit from heating in the winter as the spa pool is too small to swim. The beautiful gardens were a spectacular bonus to the stay experience and the very convenient adjacent golf course excellent if a little challenging to play. It however needs some care and attention if it is to maximise its inherent quality but the clubhouse is splendid with a world class terrace overlooking funchal. All in all a wonderful holiday experience.

Cet hôtel est un havre de paix : les bâtiments sont magnifiques, les jardins exceptionnels. Le personnel est très attentionné et fait tout pour qu'on se sente chez soi et c'est très réussi. Les chambres sont parfaites. Le restaurant est également de qualité : le menu table d'hôtes propose chaque jour de bons produits. La soirée spéciale vin de de Madère et spécialités locales était très bien organisée et très agréable. Le personnel à la réception accède à toutes vos envies et organise vos parties de golf, aussi bien à Palheiro qu'à Santo da Serra, vos transferts vers l'aéroport, vous conseille sur les visites... En conclusion, un excellent séjour dans un excellent établissement que nous recommandons sur cette île magnifique !

The service was excellent. Louis, Braulio, Duarte, Margareda, Cara, Dani, Sergio, Marcio, etc. made us feel very welcome and really looked after us. We also enjoyed meeting Norberto, Phillip and Katia. The gardens were amazing. Our room (35) was noisy (very thin walls) and will stay in the main house next time. The food ranged from excellent to okay. The decor was a little dated for our taste. We enjoyed the golf course and the spa (Ana was amazing). Overall, a most enjoyable and relaxing experience thanks mainly to the staff. We will be back.

Very good experience overall. We have already booked up to come again next year and mentioned the hotel to several friends. What could improve?
1) we were not impressed with the soundproofing in the newer buildings (eg the gold wing). For a hotel of this standard I think this should be improved.
2) the restaurant is very good. We were keen though to have a slightly more casual / less formal option. I believe that the other restaurant across the golf course will be re opening this month - I am sure we will visit that next time. But I wonder if there is some sort of option for a slightly less formal (and less expensive) option in the hotel itself? Otherwise v impressive - and the team were more than happy to set Ip our breakfast table outside. They couldn’t have been more helpful. And also (sorry can’t remember her name) the lady on the front desk was extremely obliging when we kept wanting to change our room! But now we have found our perfect room so will be back next year…

Top customer service, particularly from Luis, who was filled with a wealth of information on the estate, island and local wine. Luis was so welcoming and attentive and made our stay truly memorable. My partners birthday was made extremely special by the staff who also made him a birthday cake. What an incredible house and grounds steeped with history. Nothing was too much for the staff at the hotel, world class hosting. The food was excellent, well executed and beautiful presented.

Très belle découverte de ce relais & château raffiné et élégant.
Nous y avons reçu un très bon accueil et avons beaucoup apprécié le professionnalisme et la bienveillance des équipes.
La carte des cocktails au bar mériterait seulement d'etreun peu plus créative, mais nous avons apprécié la mise en avant des madère de la famille Blandy's car c'est aussi pour cela que l'on vient séjourner ici.

C’est une maison a laquelle nous sommes attaches par sa beaute, son charme et son personnel.
Nous sommes sensibles a son entretien mais nous avons ete decus par les choix qui ont ete fait dans la renovation des chambres: la mise aux standards americains detruit le charme anglais de la demeure…!
Surtout ne changez pas le style des salons et salles a manger du RDC, ni la Golf Garden Suite!!
Nous aimons resider chez les Blandy, pas leurs cousins americains…!

The hotel is magnificent and grounds and golf course meticulously kept. Our room was lovely and incredibly comfortable. We appreciated the chocolates and complimentary water. Unfortunately the spa and fitness room was disappointing. We explored the grounds and enjoyed the views from the club house. The hotel is in a remote location at the top of an extremely steep and tricky drive especially in the rain. The property is 1600 m above sea level so the weather is more gloomy than in Funchal. The dining room was very formal and I found little on the menu that appealed, we tackled the difficult drive (15-20 minutes) to local restaurants instead. Breakfast was pleasant but definitely not 5* standard. The staff we all charming and polite, yet we found the overall atmosphere to be quite stuffy.

Staff were in general excellent, from the reception to bedroom staff, Louis and his team of Duarte, Moses, Rosa and everyone else in Louis' team in the restaurant. The young chef was exceptionally talented - food was creative and tasteful, much better than Villa Cipriani at the Reid's Palace where we stayed afterwards - every evening at Casa Velha was an epicurian delight.. the estate as a whole and formal gardens were superb - a big bonus for a guest. Only criticisms are: 1) you should heat the outdoor pool - we had to drive to Porto Moniz to swim in the outdoor volcanic pools filled with sea water which were much warmer than Casa Velha pool - very disappointing we could swim at the Casa 2. Spa pool did not look very clean from the outside 3. Didn't think the ground staff for the grounds in front of the hotel were being pushed - they were very nice men but not sure how much really good work was being done as they seemed to spend time in the bushes on their phone or smoking or just moving incredibly slowly. Place needs to look sharper, more attention to detail e.g. moss cleared off the pebble paths, gates painted, faded yellow rings around rocks painted, the ponds properly tidied - the place could look sharper 4. the interior of the bathroom doors in reception had not been wiped down for dirty finger marks - small thing but the kind of attention to detail that is important. 5. Was surprised on New Year's eve at 4 pm reception staff did not know the arrangements for the evening and had to chase down Louis, which they did but were clearly embarrassed at not having the programme. None of this really distracted from the time we had at the hotel, enjoying the extraordinary estate and particularly the New Year's Eve arrangements and walking (our choice) to the Golf Club to watch the extraordinary fireworks over Funchal. The hotel was a home from home, the other guests charming, staff faultless, the chef excellent and it would be somewhere I would happily revisit - but please put some heat in the swimming pool to make it usable. The lush gardens at this property are reason enough to visit! The staff is kind and service is very good. The property has gone through recent renovations, and the rooms are spacious and well-appointed. The decor tends to be on the formal side, but that befits the history of the main building that used to be a summer home for the monarchy. The breakfast is good, but if you stay for a week, it gets a bit monotonous because there's barely any variety from day to day. The restaurant is very formal, so dinners feel a bit stuffy, and we didn't love a lot of the food we had. The spa could use some renovations because it's not at the same level as the rest of the hotel. They were building a huge covered stage outside to be used for events and yoga, surrounded by the gardens, so that should be a nice addition. Overall, we had a peaceful and lovely stay, and I would definitely recommend this property for a relaxing getaway, especially if you enjoy lush gardens and nature!

We spent the last days of our honeymoon at Casa Velha do Palheiro and so it will always have a special place in our hearts. We were received with the warmest of welcomes by Senhor Norberto de Sousa and his fantastic team. Upon check-in we were received with a complimentary drink, which was very thoughtful. We had a unique room in the main house reserved for us, one we could enjoy in peaceful bliss and it also had plenty of space for us not too feel like we were in just one room. On one of the tables in the room there was a welcoming letter from Senhor Norberto, a bottle of Madeira wine and the traditional "bolo de mel" (Madeira Christmas fruit cake) which was very kind. The sun rays filled the room, as we had two balconies and three windows! The bathroom was absolutely perfect for a couple looking for some precious time together. The elegant old bath was my favourite feature!
We also spent lovely mornings at Casa Velha do Palheiro, slowly enjoying the delicious breakfast, both outside in the garden and inside the dining room. We noted how attentive and kind the staff were with us, something truly admirable since it cannot be said of all 5* hotels! Something we really treasured was the silence that was respected during breakfast, so that all guests could enjoy themselves.
Our mornings and early afternoons were spent exploring the beautiful and endless gardens of the estate. There is a sense of peace that grows upon you as you walk around. At one point, we reached the golf and a guest golfer asked my husband, "Do you need a hand? Are you lost?" to which my husband answered, "No, well, actually, I'm voluntarily getting lost!". We also noticed how the gardeners worked away and smiled at us ever so politely as we passed by and wished them a good morning.
I had the pleasure of enjoying the spa, which I must say is absolutely unmissable! It is placed near the outdoor pool, in a quiet area. It is a vast spa that is very well equipped, with a welcoming reception, an indoor pool, a sauna, a Turkish bath, the changing rooms and plenty of individual treatment rooms. I enjoyed a truly relaxing back and neck massage by Ana Filipa, who has majestic hands! I was very happy with the treatment room, which was warm when I entered and had a view to the garden. I cannot speak more highly of the massage bed, it was warm throughout the treatment, the towels were particularly well placed around the head area (which is not easy!) and extremely comfortable (in fact, it is the most comfortable massage bed I have ever been on!).
In the evenings, we would have a delightful drink at the bar, which was elegantly decorated with Christmas decorations, there was soft background music playing and the fire was burning away. We felt like we were sitting in our living room!
Lastly, during our stay we saw how the traditional Madeira "Lapinha" (Nativity Scene) was carefully assembled and finalized, which is exceptional! It was perfectly placed in the ancient tree at the entrance of the hotel, welcoming guests to the festive season.

This is a fine hotel, in a fine location, on a fine island. The staff and attention to detail is good to excellent. Apart from one visit during the 7 day stay Funchal, we were able to do little else but relax, read, wander through the gardens, and across the golf course. This is what has drawn us 4 times to Casa Velha.
To us the important upset was the poor breakfast that is now provided, where in the past we have strongly recommended the hotel to friends, some of which have been. To use an English idiom we feel you are "shooting yourseves in the foot!" over breakfasts, when your evening meals are excellent, and meat dishes very generous and excellently cooked. Why spoil it at breakfast to save a few euros?

Very bad dinner experience a vela palheiro, order 4 spaghettis bolognese. Got only two with a table spoon sauce each. They told us they did not have enough sauce for four. The dinner was a disaster and we felt like we were an inconvenience to the staff.

Meine ersten Besuche erfolgten 2005-2007 und es hat sich wenig verändert. Die Zimmer sind liebevoll renoviert und man fühlt einfach diesen englischen Spirit.

We had had a stressful year or two and needed an escape. We stayed 12 days and were blown away by its peace, elegance, and relaxed ambience. The staff were outstanding whether front of house, bar and restaurant, spa or housekeeping, and could not do enough for us, always with a smile. We have stayed in five-star hotels in numerous countries over the decades. So many of them did not justify the status. There is more to hospitality than bricks and mortar and stiff formality. Das gesamte Management (Catia und Norberto), das Restaurantpersonal unter der engagierten Leitung von Luis Emanuel und alle anderen Mitarbeiter kümmern sich vorbildlich und lesen dem Gast jeden Wunsch von den Augen ab. Der Restaurant Chef verwöhnt die Gäste mit regionalen Produkten. Das Menü ist die Krönung eines Urlabstages.Wir besuchen das Hotel seit Jahren und werden Casa Velha auch in Zukunft treu bleiben.

The staff were universally helpful and friendly, but also efficient. The venue was relaxing and calming. I am not sure what else reasonably anyone could ask for.

Shuttle service to Funchal, 1 a day, is not adequate bearing in mind the isolated nature of the hotel and cost of taxis. This service has been cut since our last stay.
Breakfast food area is not refrigerated and not refreshed frequently enough. Avocados should be on the menu for vegan guests at no extra cost.
Bar menu has no vegan/vegetarian options unless requested.
Vanity products inadequate for a 5* hotel just 1 small plastic bottle of body cream and 2 cotton pads for a 2 week stay.
All Hotel staff are exceptional
Golf Buggies are very expensive considering they are old most with no automated course planner, no water, score cards, tees etc as expected at all 5* golf resorts. no golf club cleaning service this year?
Golf course was tired with most bunkers out of play tho this is being addressed we believe.
This hotel is not suited to holding wedding receptions as this affects hotel guest areas particularly when young children are allowed to run around screaming on the immediate lawn disturbing this quiet area.
Very disappointed in the service and food at the Golf Clubhouse which was very good on our visit last year.

We moved the ambience of the property, the cleanliness, the history, intimacy and the very very friendly, welcoming and attentive staff.
The only negative was the dress code for dinner. whilst we applaud having one and are more than happy to comply with it there are two things: firstly it is not made clear before arrival that there is a dress code or what that is - no shorts, no matter how smart, for men. Secondly, I’m reality the dress code was so varied it lost its affect, which was a real shame as the hotel deserves people to be smart and well dressed. However, men were allowed to enter the dinning room in scruffy, badly fitting T-shirts, dirty jeans and hiking boots or battered trainers just because they had “long trousers”. Yet my husband who was smartly dressed in a smart shirt and tailored shorts was denied entry - although he looked look smarter and more in keeping with the atmosphere - just because he didn’t have long trousers. No problem for being denied if everyone else was dressed smartly. It seemed incongruous. We enjoyed dinner in the bar nonetheless and the staff were very accommodating regardless.

Der Zimmerservice ist leider für ein 5 Sterenehotel mangelhaft. Wir haben uns bereits beschwert, jedoch würde weiterhin nur oberflächlich sauber gemacht. In den Ecken der Zimmerdecken hängt Staub, tote Mücken an den Wänden werden nicht entfernt, Haare im Bad werden auch nach Mitteilung an der Rezeption nicht sauber entfernt....die Reinigung ist nur sehr oberflächlich. Eine Abnahme scheint hier nicht zu erfolgen.
Der Service kommt beim Frühstück nicht hinterher. Nach 3 Tagen war Joghurt und Saft nicht mehr am Buffet verfügbar sondern nur auf Bestellung. Gerade beim Saft müsste man immer wieder der Bedienung nachlaufen, damit der Saft aufgefüllt wird.

Our stay at Casa Velha do Palheiro was absolutely exceptional ! Such a peaceful place ! The property is stunning, the premises are well maintained. The food is delicious. But what struck us the most was the professionalism and the kindness of the staff. Everyone was very thoughtful, never intrusive, always very helpful. This is very high standard service but keeping it simple at the same time. An absolute must ! We would love to come back as soon as possible, we are obviously recommending Casa Velha do Palheiro as much as we can to our friends and family. We would like to warmly thank again all the staff members who made our stay magical. And a special thank to Danny (from the bar/restaurant/breakfast) who was super super nice !
